Kerala, India * The Backwaters *

Kerala, one of my favorite destinations in India.  I have been there several times and keep coming back.   Kerala is nicknamed, “God's Own Country” and you can see why when you arrive in Kerala.  Well-known for its lush greenery, waterfalls, and world famous backwaters.  The backwaters in Kerala are lagoons and lakes parallel to the Arabian Sea.  The backwaters are also quite popular for boat races.

Kerala is blessed with unmatched beauty and attractions among which the backwaters are a favorite and must do when you come.  Kerala backwaters have greatly helped in the boom of Kerala tourism industry.  For more information on Kerala, check out my previous postings on this site :-)

In this heavenly state of India, there are many picturesque backwater destinations among which Kumarakom, Alleppey, Cochin, Kuttanad, Kovalam, Kollam, Kottayam and Kasargod are very popular among tourists and are the prime backwater destinations in Kerala.   Holidays in Kerala are incomplete without enjoying a houseboat over the beautiful backwaters.  The houseboats come with a chef on board to serve you all your meals, so sit back, relax, eat and be merry, it is truly a memorable event of lifetime.  The food is wonderful in Kerala, seems like everything about this place is heavenly :-)

    Dear Renee Lynn,
Thank you very much for responding to my views on you. It is highly heartening to come across some people like you who love animals esp. the cows. I have to discuss some points with you and sorry I won’t be able to do it in a few lines. Please permit me to out pour my views.
It is a pity to see Indians becoming gluttonous beef eaters. The situation is worst in Kerala. If you had been to Kottayam or Kattappana you would have seen slaughtered cows hanging on hooks and their severed heads displayed in front of the butcher shops. A totally disgusting sight.
There was a time when cows/cattle and land were considered as sources for sustenance and many many years earlier they were revered and cow was regarded as ‘GO MATHA’ or cow mother.
Now I am sorry to say that such thoughts are left with in the minds of a very few and they are considered as old timers or worse people with obsolete thoughts! Perhaps you might already be knowing that what is said and presented before you – a cow lover from the US- will not be real! One out of three in Kerala is a beef eater, and very rarely could you find one you hadn’t eaten beef!
Where did it all first begin? The British started the legacy of beef eating. Indian Christians were also beef eaters though not as voraciously as the British were neglected by the British. But they encouraged the Indian Muslim to carry on doing it to irritate and get the Hindus and Muslims remain religiously and culturally divided.
The British departed and India became an independent country. The country was divided into states based on language and the all the states were being started to be ruled by worthless politicians. But at this stage the politicians hadn’t become greedy, crafty and corrupt as they are today.
By the sixties the country was in the grip of the venturous group of politicians as mentioned above and the real destruction of culture started. The politicians found that by appeasing the minority could gain their favour and were ready to do anything like making sacrilegious remarks about Hindu rituals, customs and shy even the Hindu gods! There were some political groups in Tamilnadu who openly declared that beef eating will help them gain status in the society as a revolutionary movement and will help them fight the rich Hindus!
There are many such practices that have finally made the people so merciless and least compassionate towards animals. Cow lost its reverential status and became just an animal to be killed and eaten. Now the stage has come when majority of the Hindus don’t even know that their ancestors abhorred the very thought of eating beef!
I have some good friends in the US and Greece who think like us and have surprised me about their concern for India and her flora and fauna.
I have one honest question to you . Do you think that a change could be brought about in the minds of the people even though not to the extent of loving cows as you, me and a few others do but just to feel sorry for them and stop eating them?
What is your feeling about the treatment of cows here?
I wish you a very happy and prosperous 2014.
    With kind regards,
    Dilip
